Stainless steel seamless pipe is manufactured from a solid billet and machining the center and the outside of the billet, to form a pipe to standard specifications. This process does not include any welding and because of this, seamless pipe was historically looked upon as being able to withstand pressure better than welded pipe. Seamless pipe was also more readily available in the past. Welded pipe has advanced with technologies, which has allowed a leveling of functionality and availability. Seamless pipe cannot be manufactured with small wall thicknesses, but if you are in need of stainless steel pipe with small to medium outside diameters and larger wall thicknesses, seamless pipe is the way to go.

Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe Manufacturing

As suggested by the name, seamless tubing does not have a visible welding seam; it is perfectly smooth and rounded. Instead, seamless stainless steel tubing is made through an extrusion process where the tube is drawn from a solid stainless steel billet and extruded into a hollow form. The billets are heated and then formed into oblong circular molds that are hollowed in a piercing mill. While they’re still hot, the molds are drawn through a mandrel rod and elongated. This increases the length of the mold by twenty times to form the seamless tube shape. The tube is then further formed through a cold rolling process or cold drawing process.
